What makes a person’s dash worthwhile? Who decides? Does a mention in the memoirs of history mean that your life mattered? What about the millions that live and die largely unnoticed? Are their lives any less worthwhile?

I think anytime we try to determine for ourselves whether or not a life is worthwhile we create a sliding scale. Phrases like “I’m not as bad as….”, or “I’m better than that guy…”, or “Yeah, that thing I did was bad, but look at all the other things I did good…” start to enter the picture.
There’s got to be a better bench mark.

To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better – Whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know that even one life has breathed easier because you lived; This is to have succeeded.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Yea, so this might be a secular point of view, but it reminds me that my dash matters no matter what I do with it. My dash matters simply because God created me for a purpose. It’s not about what I do or don’t do, but I hope to do everything for the glory of God.

What makes a person’s dash worthwhile?
The
it puts on others face when they think of you or the dash.
What about the millions that live and die largely unnoticed? Are their lives any less worthwhile?
Not to those who may of personally known them.

God gives you the dash and it is up to us to ask Him what He wants us to do with it.

I can analyize my life, but what has always been a thought in the back of my mind is what you brought up..”What about the millions that live and die largely unnoticed? Are their lives any less worthwhile?” God is good and their life has purpose and meaning, I don’t question that. But am I missing out by not interacting with those that seem to be outcasts? Am I the one outcasting myself to a fruitfull relationship I could have with someone who isn’t anything like me? I probably have more in common with someone who is homeless or doesn’t have a family, than I do with those immediately around me. Sobering reality: I am not doing enough for Christ with the dash He has blessed me with. Thanks for the this forum!

What don’t you agree with Idetrorce…the fact that 10 out of 10 people die? …If so, I need some of what you’re drinking
Seriously though…you didn’t say what you don’t agree with and why. Talk to you soon.

The Bible is clear as to what really matters. John 3:16 and John 14 map out our primary direction and purpose for life: that we should approach our lives with thankfulness and humility for what God has provided for all of us. This is apparent to say the least.
But as we are in the Christmas season, the story by Dickens, “A Christmas Carol” reminds us to take nothing for granted and to OPEN OUR EYES to what is happening around us–and TO WHOM.
James 1:27 encourages us to approach our lives and “religion” simply by providing comfort for those who are suffering: specifically widows and orphans in their distress. I would go so far to say that if we cannot provide assistance directly, then indirectly through our prayers and resources–yes MONEY.
Impacting peoples’ lives, investing in them, letting them know you care–because of what Christ has done for you–is what will give significance to the dash–and Glory to God who has given us life in the first place!
It has been well said that “no one cares how much you know (or how much money you make…) until they know how much you care.” You can’t take anything else with you into eternity. Someone else gets our “stuff.”
Make a difference in someone else’s life and that will impact not only this life but the next. And make no mistake…we all get eternal life! But God, in His infinite wisdom, grace, and love, gives us a clear choice as to WHERE we get to “spend” what we’ve invested in…
Seek Him–and LISTEN to what He whispers to you.
In the movie, “I am Legend” Will Smith’s character finally acknowledges God and “listens.” Then by DOING SACRIFICIALLY, is able to not only save the lives of a young woman and her son, but is remembered as a legend.
Do you see?? He was unable to accomplish anything without acknowledging God and His higher purpose for his life!! He loves you deeply. Keep listening–

He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and
to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

to stand before my Lord and hear:
Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
