It’s funny you should ask. In the past month, a thought keeps running through my mind. Here goes…
How can I serve God personally with my life and resources? Would I be serving Him? Would I be lost? Am I just riding the wave because it’s convenient? Would I be too afraid to step out and make a difference in the lives of others even if it means it’s me all by myself? These and many other pressing thoughts will be answered in the near future by God’s grace.

Now what??? You got me thinking? What is the next step? Do I go volunteer at an old folks home? Treat my co-workers better?? Go home & kiss my kids? I have to say this website caught me a little off guard. I wasn’t expecting to hear what I heard. I guess I need to process my thoughts.

This makes me remember how short this life really is. That what we do with our lives does effect our eternity and the lives of others. Are we living a life of meaning or a life of “me”, meaning are we putting God and others first in our lives, or only thinking of ourselves? I pray I will apply this to my life on a daily basis!

The Dash Presentation ties right in to a conversation that I participated in tonight at my table during the Ladies Bible study at CCFTL. Lori, who was new tonight, shared her testimony as a Cancer Survivor. God “woke her up” as a result of her diagnosis. During her fight to beat the disease last year, a co-worker unexpectedly died of a heart attack. Now, her circle of friends understands the reality that tomororw is NOT guaranteed. We must use TODAY to declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light (I Peter 2:9).

I am daily addressing this very issue. I am a socia worker by trade and a Christian by choice! I have seen my dash become more meaningful as of late, beginning with serving the population of LA, during Hurricane Katrina. I pray that the Lord will enlighten, guide and grant discernment on a daily basis that I may serve HIM even more specifically. I shall: D-Daily

I pray that every day I receive the vision and courage to remove from my life any obstacles to a full and passionate relationship with my Maker. The “dash” makes little sense without a complete and open relationship with the Lord. The result of this is evident to everyone around, for the love is uncontainable.

Learning that everyday is His day, not mine. As I share with God “my” agenda for the day, submitting that agenda to Him and asking Him to prioritize my list, and at times, He completely changes that list . . . if I am open enough to let Him!! Yes, the dash is mine, but if I am truly submitted to God’s will for my life, the dash is His.

Wow! Lately the shortness of our time (dash) has been made very apparent to me with the recent and sudden loss of a loved one. In the days that followed my sister’s death, my mom was given a revelation from God. My sister had a horseback riding accident when she was 9 and almost died. She lived another 40 years and died suddenly in an automobile accident this year. God gifted her 40 years to touch the lives of everyone around her. God is so good to bring us light in the darkest of times. What are we doing to touch the lives of those around us? What will our dash say about us? Make your dash count. Love as He has commanded us to love one another and make every day count. John 13:35

There are so many of us on this earth. In this country we are surrounded and flush by worldly possessions it makes it hard for us to realize the plight of others in the rest of the world. We have become blind and complacent. I realized this a year or so ago and I have made changes to my life. I am raising my children to know that things are just that – things. What is most important is the Love of God and Christ and what we do with that love. Since there are so many of us on earth, if we each just do a little bit more to help others and spread the word, a huge difference can be made. So…. volunteer, lend a hand, talk to a homeless person on the street corner, give food away. Isn’t this what Jesus would be doing?
Lani // October 5, 2007 at 12:32 pm |
I was just struggling with the decision of whether or not I should volunteer in the Children’s Ministry. I was doubting if I could make the commitment. After watching the video, I NEED to volunteer. I need my Dash to mean something. What better way is there to expand the kingdom of God than helping to bring up little Christian soldiers. I have made my decision!
Make your dash count!

This is amazing to be asked this question at this time in my life. I am at a serious point, God first was telling me I was in the wrong place….then He stood right next to me. (Be still and know that “I” am God.. Psalm 46:10), now I feel He is pulling me to do HIS work. In an extreme way!! My prayer has been to only live and breath His will. He has poured SUCH grace on me and my family, absolute miracles! Amazing testimonies! Miracles that words can’t explain ~ and now I KNOW, from these trails, the work He wants me to do. I am in the process of having the means to do this! And He will provide! Big goals BUT our God is an awesome GOD!!! (: I adore Him!! He is my all and all~~~

Wow! What a thought provoking presentation. It is interesting that God has already been dealing with my heart about serving Him fully and completely also! I feel like I have wasted so many years and wish I could do it all over again, but I know God uses everything in our lives. As I have been growing in the Word over the past few years, however, I feel the call to deeper, complete, give-my-all, service to Gods work. I don’t know yet what that will be and I don’t have a lot of years left so I want the remaining years to count more than ever. God has been answering prayer in our lives in some unimaginable miraculous ways that can only be done by His Hand and has shown me first hand that nothing is impossible for Him. What an awesome God we serve! Thank you for the thought provoking dash…..

Since coming back to Christ and his mercies after being gone for 37 years, I feel God wants me to be in some kind of ministry and to go forth and spread the word. I have seen his answers to prayer that only could be called a miracle and have also stood by as my life seem to be coming apart and God putting it back together piece by piece.

Awesome way to make me think of what is important today. What glory can I bring to you Lord, today. I need to let him direct my life because I made a mess of it. Now, I watch my kids do what I use to do and they don’t want to listen, it is hard to watch. I keep praying and know that it is in his time. For his glory and wisdom I live today..

My biggest goal in life is to serve my Lord and Savior in any way that He calls me. It is not always be easy but I know that He is right here with me, showing Himself to be faithful; blessing my obedience and perseverance and pouring His grace and mercy over me. I long to be in my Father’s arms and hear Him say to me “Well done good and faithful servant.” This is what I want the meaning of my dash to be.

It is an uphill battle for sure trying to get the Good News out to a world that doesn’t want to believe there is only one way to get to heaven. For me, befriending new people so they may hear me, emails, portraying Jesus through my words and actions, these are the ways I use to make a statement. I am constantly looking for something else that works well for me to be even more effective to tell others that Jesus Christ is Lord.

To every soul the Lord puts in my path — to sow into their lives spiritual seeds to bring them Home to the Lord. To give as much as I can, in any way that I possibly am able to bring souls into the Kingdom. And equally, look, act and
depict the heart of God towards the world around me.

It is amazing the valuable time we waist in our lives playing the victim role. We do not appreciate how bless we are and mainly that we are children of God. We are to live in victory. We expend so much time living in darkness and listen the voice of the enemy without listen and look in our inner self. Whoever wants to see his face will find Him. Yes, the time is now.

Wake up call. As the years quickly pass, it becomes more and more important to be a living legacy. Not always easy but so rewarding when you know that you are doing what God wanted you to do. At the age of nearly 58 I am still searching for my call and purpose but realise you must daily deal with life in a loving and truthful manner. Thanks be to the Lord that he is there nudging my conscience guiding me to action.

I remember when Pastor Bob preached this sermon the first time at CC and I was inspired then. In the last few years I have had several events in my life that might once have been overwhelming, but not now. God is my source for everything and I love Him and have given Him all the problems, but He showed me that I needed more love and compassion for others, so that is my biggest desire for my dash – that God will fill me with love every day that He chooses to let me live. (No matter how unloveable others might seem) And, that I can let them know that my love for them is because God first loved me.
Kathy // October 8, 2007 at 4:22 pm |
This is not the first time I’ve heard Bob talk about THE DASH. The first time was probably 8 years ago and it’s always stuck with me. When I encounter a negative and complaiing person in life I always think about THE DASH. I think if they only knew how short life is and could stop and see that the thing they’re wasting time complaining about is very small in the grand scheme of things. That if they could stop thinking about themselves for one minute and concentrate on someone else and their needs they would feel God’s love pour into them.
My husband and I are going through a hard time right now but I look around and see others who have it worse than we do. I’m lucky enough to have my faith in God but what do they have? So I plan on spending my dash letting them know about the ONE who can bring joy and hope in the most sorrowful times if you stop complaining, start loving others, and most importantly BELIEVE.

I love the message. I pray people go forward with it. One technical suggestion. Maybe have an option for a downloadable version vs. the streaming video. I have a 256k connection and it was really jittery I know people with dial up won’t be able to view it at all. Just a suggestion. God bless!

Well My Lord woke me up this past weekend. People say I help them, you just dont now you do until afterward. I’m searching for more ways to make my Lord SMILE. I help children learn about him. Make it a Great Day in The Lord!! God Bless

It seems I battle needing what I don’t have and having what I don’t need. And who really determines the dash? God or man? And in the end, who knows the real truth of how successful the dash was lived? And who is the judge? Mother Terressa felt isolated from God most of her life – this truth was recorded in a diary found after her death. Could all her good work be in vain. Did she really know Jesus as her Saviour? WE will never know for sure in our life time. As man, so far removed from our Almighty God, and even with the blood of Jesus over us and His Spirit in us, how much good do we really accomplish? It isn’t about works; yet by their fruit you will know them. Yet, the saved and the unsaved work hand-in-hand in our churches; and someday Jesus will say “depart from me, you workers of inquity.” Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The only real test of God living in us. I’m old; and sometimes I think, why try? Everyone has a different story; a different slant on God’s Word; a different understanding of God and what He is about; of our “so-called freedom” in Him. Is the dash successful if at the end many attend our funeral and praise our worth, even because of who we are in Christ? Or could an unmarked grave of one who gave his life for the sake of many be met with “well done, my good and faithful servant.” I don’t know and I don’t think anyone else knows. Only God is the judge. Sandra

WOW!. This really get’s you thinking about what is truly important in life and how quickly our dash can come to it’s end. This has really caused me to evaluate my own dash and to prioritize and take action on those things dearest to the Lords heart, namely souls, let us be about the Fathers business. I kinda’ felt like I was doing alright, but this has impressed me to take it to the next level and step up and step out and even get more creative and assertive in witnessing for Christ. Thanx
Sophia // October 8, 2007 at 10:27 pm |
This makes me think about my current situation. My dash is changing in the direction that God wills. It is difficult because I had to let some things and people go. I do feel that as long as my dash is lined up with the word of God, then all is and forever will be well. I feel that we worry to much about those things that are temporay and not so much on those that are eternal. I want my dash to be led by the Spirit and no longer by my flesh. It’s my prayer that others around me surrender themselves as well. Once agin this ministry has helped confirm what God was already speaking to my heart.
Susan Carvalho // October 8, 2007 at 10:54 pm |
I believe as soon as we truly commit our lives to Christ, our dash belongs to Him, & we are then on the journey of living out our purpose in this life. Our purpose in life is really all the same, to be a disciple dying to self, & living to love others sacrificially & unconditionally, in & for our love for Christ Himself.
God has already set all things in motion by placing those people in our lives of whom we are to be His witnesses. I know without a doubt my purpose atleast at this point in time is to be a witness to my unbelieving spouse of 24 years(come Feb.) & my children. This life is tough but a blessing somehow all at the same time. When we really give our all in love to Him, there is nothing we cannot do in Him, & the love He shows to us, as well as through us is absolutely AWESOME!!!!

You got me thinking… what am I doing with every single minute of my day? Am I doing something significant, superficial, nothing? Am I stocked in the past, thinking in the future, how my life would be then? Man, this is all about *now* huh? This very moment, every single moment…
I stopped and thought of something deep today after I visited the dash site. Y o u r D a s h. How cool is that?
Someone told me once that there are things that are true whether I believe in it or not! … “…Face to face with my maker”? Should I be scared? Happy? Should I care? – I don’t know if I like these thoughts though… I guess I’ll think more about this.
Thanks for “listening”

“What on Earth are you doing for Heaven’s sake?” That was a cross stitch piece that I did. It asks the same question. Whatever my dash is all about, it is for heaven’s sake.
Jason // October 9, 2007 at 1:56 pm |
This speaks pretty loudly to the brevity of man’s life. And it’s something I think about a lot, especially since I turned 30 a few years ago. And every time I think about the question of “what am I going to do with it” I get anxious. Because I don’t know. And the more I try to answer the question, the more anxious I get. So finally I just decided that I didn’t want the dash anymore, on account of the fact that it caused me too much anxiety. I’m unloading the dash on God. Now he can worry about it.
Sometimes I still find myself anxious, and when I do I usually find that I’m holding onto the dash, trying to wrestle back into my own hands.

How true this is! I lost my 40 year old husband to a totally unexpected heart attack two years ago. He loved our Lord, Jesus Christ, and is now serving Him in Heaven. Life truly is SHORT, and we NEVER know how much time on earth we have. It is up to us to share God’s word with the world before our time is up.
After this traumatic event in my life, I started praying for God to bring unsaved people into my life for me to share God’s love with. In the last two years, I have been on a life journey to share with these ones how God has helped me through the death of my husband. After sharing my story with so many, I have seen hearts open to Jesus. What a blessing my husband’s death has been for those who did not know our Lord! I thank Him now that I have had this opportunity to help others come to know Him. Praise the Lord!

Very interesting way to think about you life and
what you’ve done with it. It’s really such a short time. Make the most of it. I am recently a mother of two girls and at times it’s really hard but I also know that the Lord has helped me. I KNOW he’s there, no doubt. I thank the
Lord for ALL my family and friends who have helped me in the earthly world but the Lord is the Only One who could help me with my inner self. My heart and my mind. The Lord gives me a feeling of peace.

As far as I can figure out, there is only one reason to be left on earth after we are saved. That is to live our lives for Jesus, be obedient to His Call, and tell as many people as we can about Him. My husband also died three years ago, and in that time, this reality has become stronger and stronger. I pray my dash is full of hope and an example to the next generation that without Jesus, there is no hope. This is a sad world without Him, and we need to be the examples everyone is looking for, even if they don’t know it. Thank you for a thought provoking site.

Patience is a fruit of the Spirit, if this is an outreach to the “unsaved”, the unsaved do not have Patience. They may be dead and in Hell before ‘Dash’ gets any point whatsoever across or they even finish a bottle of free water or get to wonder who made their toilet so fresh and what makes that person so different.
‘Dash’ not false doctrine, not evangelism, not anything except a question that as I remember was often asked in bars. ie. What are you doing these days?
Be real, Give them Truth, Preach the whole counsel of God! Not bits and pieces.

«Human beings, my friends,» said General Loewenhielm, «are frail and foolish. We have all been told that grace is to be found in the universe. But in our human foolishness and shortsightedness we imagine that divine grace has limits. We tremble when we make our choices in life, and after making them, we fear we might have made the wrong choice. But the moment comes when our eyes are opened, and we see and realize that grace is limitless. Grace, my friends, demands nothing from us. It makes no conditions and singles no one out in particular. Grace takes us all in and proclaims us free. What we have chosen is given us, and what we have refused is also granted us. It is poured out upon us in abundance. For mercy and truth have met together, and righteousness and bliss have kissed one another.» from Babettes Feast

Daily as I live in my “dash” I constantly remind myself to keep looking to Him who comforts us. This past year has brought many trials in all areas of my life- family, work, spiritual, finances, home and yet the blessings (like the phone call I just received) in many ways are the proof that God is looking out for me and has never forsaken me for a second.
For anyone wondering if they should volunteer, never wonder, take the step toward that nudge you feel. Take the first step and you will never look back. God will touch your heart when the right ‘work’ comes along. I did and by listening to God’s calling for me I’m making my “dash” count in my community, and beyond, by being an advocate for Human Rights and the Status of Women, Education, Economic Development, International Goodwill and Understanding and so much more.
I found that lifelong special passion in my “dash” in volunteering. It allows me to share my Faith in ways that are making a difference in the lives of women and girls directly and indirectly. These differences then offer Hope and Faith to these women’s families by helping them see that others believe in them and their future.
My ‘dash’ is happening because I listened to God’s gentle offer to give my life purpose.

Although I am a Christian and have been so for some time, this made me think about what kind of impact is my life making?! This will make me live intentionally and more obedient to the Holy Spirit’s leading. Thank you for the reminder!!!

Here’s a poem I’ve been saving on my computer for years now. I don’t know the author but I love the poem.
Your Dash
I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning… to the end.
He noted that first came her date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years. (1900 – 1970)
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth…
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own;
The cars… the house… the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard…
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real,
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile…
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy’s being read
With your life’s actions to rehash…
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

It’s only when your dash (or a loved ones dash) is threatened that we really realize just how valuable it is. Every day we have a choice as to how we affect the lives of people around us. If we make the right choice..people are blessed by your actions and words. If we make the wrong choice, God grants us forgiveness and a new day (hopefully) to try again.

God has a hold of my dash and I am allowing Him to help me make a difference. How do I know I am? Because I love what I do and I could not imagine doing anything else. God has a hold of my dash and my heart…I think the latter is what keeps the other lasting longer. Amen

Are you so certain you can, or indeed are, only a dash?? I propose that no one’s dash will really ever end!! So to be more precise we might refer to the trail we blaze as more of an infinite line.
The telling question would then be – to where does my line into infinity travel? And with whom will I be aligned and in whose company? If I am not a circle or a line with BOTH an infinite beginning and an infinite end, is there one who started my line with an intended purpose and destination?
Many of us, but not most, believe with certainty and valid reason there really is the “One”. So since my line, in real time and history, was deliberately begun, I must alingn it with the instruments of navigation provided, both internal and external, using them intentionally to find the trail planned only for me. That providentially inspired, shining path brings meaning, fullfillment, and eternal significance transforming me from a soon forgotten “dash” that would disappear forever beneath the cosmic radar.
So you see, my line is tracking straight and true, as it was eternally intended. It brings hope in an otherwise dark void populated by many who know where they are tracking -always toward the Light which gave them birth, and the many more who spin and sail blindly or carelessly away from the Light that birthed them, farther and farther down into darkness infinitly.
Take care that your “dash” will be a straight line that tracks true to the place of its real origin. That in reality is why you actually are!

My Dash
My dash has great purpose and distinct characteristics, it is original, unique, and a reflection of its creator. My dash is the realization of a prophetic destiny, and exists at this time in human history so that it can accomplish Gods purposes and fulfill His plans. My dash has been preordained by the same God who created the Heavens and the Earth chance and mistake have nothing to do with it. My dash is not my own, it is my fathers, it has been bought at a price and it’s debt is paid in full.
My dash stands in the gap for anyone who does not yet know Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and savior. My dash brings freedom to those in bondage, peace to the warmonger, rest to the weary, hope to the hopeless, clarity to the confused, rehabilitation to the wounded, light to the darkness, truth to the lies, answers to the questions, health to the sick, refreshment to exhaustion, and love to the clanging symbols.
My dash is nothing apart from God, it couldn’t even separate the numbers of my phone if I had to make a call. It would be like the vacant space between the digits, overlooked, unseen, and ineffective. Without God my dash would be ash, blown away with less then a breath and lasting half as long.
My dash is covered by the precious blood of Jesus, it’s armor plated with God’s Holy spirit, It’s walks in humility, is lead by the Holy spirit, and knows first hand how incredible God grace is, how amazing Gods mercy can be, and will personally testify to his limitless love. My dash feeds on bread of life, God’s word. My dash has a thirst that can only be quenched by the living waters of God’s precious Holy Spirit.
My dash longs to be used in God mathematical equation, it rests at the tip of His pen. Constant in its readiness my dash waits to make its mark. At the request of my Holy Father and King I willingly lay my dash down on the pages of His scratch pad, choosing to make myself available to the great mathematician. Allowing Him to add and subtract from me as He sees fit.
My Dash has the ability to be used in many different ways. Mathematically it’s 7 fold:
1.) It lays down straight and Subtracts from the number of souls that are being counted on in hell. (-)
2.) It stands up vertically joining together with another dash and Adds to the numbers of names that will be written in the lambs book of life. (+)
3.) It Chris-crosses with another dash using what God has blessed us with to Multiply the blessings of God. (X)
4.) It points straight as the Holy Spirit comes along on each side and Division takes place, the light from the dark, the good from the bad, the sin from the sinner. (*)
5.) It can be placed parallel to a kindred dash, so that the answer to every problem Equals God. (=)
6.) It often times will lay diagonally placed specifically between two circles of ministry acting only as a small Percent of the whole equation. (%)
7.) It’s most common use is to be joined together with other dashes, to accomplish a mutual work for the Lord, knowing that it’s greatest strength always lies in Numbers. (#)
If my dash were not a dash but a single word then it would read Yahweh, is it were not a single word but a sentence it would read “Jesus is Lord” if it were neither a word or a sentence but a voice then it would praise His name, and if it were a voice that could carry a tune it would worship the King of glory, Day and Night my dash would sing God’s praises, until it could not speak until it’s final breath, until it was nothing more then a dash. If this were the fait of my dash then it would enter into eternity satisfied and content know that it had done what it was created to do, knowing that it had left it’s mark…

I am giving my life back to the dash giver, I am telling other dashes about the good news, I am offering my dash as a living sacrifice to the dash giver. I know that I am fulfilling my dashes purpose, and I am striving to reach my dashes full potential.

These people were making their dashes count:

My daughter and I have talked about this from time to time, and discussed it’s strengths and meaning in our life. I have told her not to live an unhappy life, to live with faith and to the fullest. We attended church together one Easter and the sermon contained the dash. She is the happiest she has ever been, and told me she explained to a friend about his dash. So she is passing this message on, as am I. Make it COUNT….
